The bins donated by China along with several garbage trucks and containers have created a new flow of optimism in the minds and action of Kathmandu Metropolitan, Nepal Government and general public. The bins add to the crucial process of serving thousands of tourists a clean Nepal.
The number of tourists entering Nepal for the 2011's Nepal Tourism Year is getting bigger. Along with it, the anticipation of the Government also seems to be on the lookout for the next solution to the survive the uncertainties in the political structure of the nation.
Indeed, with this initiation a sign of relief can be experienced. Number of bins already have been placed in Basantapur and according to the recent report, the introduction of the bins actually has helped in decreasing the amount of litter. The next part of the project will cover Maitighar to Tinkune.
The question here is not about the bins but rather waste management. The amount of waste collected from the bins will definitely be dumped on the office landfill. Then What?
The introduction of the bins is indeed a positive step but the Government needs to act one step ahead. Waste Management is a profitable and progressive mechanism to be adopted in order to generate national well being. Methane is a harmful gaseous substance which is 21 times more potent for the environment than Carbon Dioxide. This gas is generated by waste produced everyday by millions of humans. The good news is that Methane only remains in the atmosphere for 10 years. If we curb the Methane production today, We will be able to provide incentives to the rapid climate change outcomes.
Carbon trading is one mechanism, the Government can tap the released Methane from waste treatment plants and landfills and can actually make money form the waste. Carbon trading is a relatively new mechanism for Nepal but many countries all over the world are actually benefiting from the mechanism.
With the rapid change in the various sector of the nation and while still struggling for reconstruction, trading Methane from the landfill sites for revenue generation might just be a light in the end of the tunnel.
